The Light Within – Graphic Novel

I realized that I haven’t posted for a long time and I don’t want anyone to think that I’ve been hit by a bus, or fallen off the face of the Earth, so I’ve dug through the archives and will be posting a few things over the next couple weeks. Some of the stuff has been posted elsewhere but it doesn’t hurt to go in and have another look!

This is an animated graphic novel that was assigned in the second semester of our NMPD program. We had a stellar group of people working on it and I think it came together really well. The backgrounds were shot around Victoria and the characters all of people that worked on the project. Then we used a lot of tools including Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Logic (and I’m sure I’m missing some) to rework the images into the final product.

Sriracha Design – Relabelling Assignment

For our latest design project we had to take an iconic brand’s packaging and rework it. I wanted to draw a rooster in Illustrator for some reason and I like hot sauce so I chose to redo the Sriracha label. I cleaned up a lot of the clutter and just chose the bare minimum for content to keep working on my clean approach to design.

Random Quote in Photoshop

The Random Quote project was from semester two. We just had to take a quote from anywhere and add some personality to it using typography techniques. I chose a line from a beautiful song by Dr. Dog, called “The Breeze”. I tried to capture some of the emotion in the song and add a bit of my own spin to it.

We were allowed to use any images and technique we wanted but I opted to mask out a photograph and keep it really simple.

Self Portrait in Photoshop

This is a project from my first semester in NMPD. We had to create a self portrait using Photoshop. I started with a photo and built up layers with CS5’s new mixer brush tool. The final image looks as if it were painted and has a real organic feel to it.

Brockman Remix – Fictitious Event Poster

So I’m kind of stepping out of order in terms of putting up my work chronologically, but this image is web ready so I thought I’d post it! We had to take the grid system from a Josef Muller-Brockmann poster and remix it into our own design. I used my love for event posters and created a piece based off of a night filled with great music (with me as the headliner of course), and went from there. I love the color and the way the grid works in this piece.

The funny thing is, I didn’t know how much of his influence was already in my work before I started researching him. He and his compadres have definitely left a huge impact on our design world!

Spread Ideas – Video

This is video that I made in After Effects for a school animation project. I chose to use mainly animated text, keeping the look very simple and clean. I paired it with a fun beat I made a few years ago to create a playful vibe.

Berlin Art + Design Expo – Fictitious Event Marketing

Here’s a school piece where we had to create promotional material for an event. I made up an art & design expo in my head, and made the post cards, poster, and T-Shirts to accompany it. This is my first portfolio worthy piece from my school projects and I love it’s simplicity and the Century Gothic font (might be my favourite typeface at the moment).

Fozzy Fest 2010 Event Poster & Flyer

Fozzy Fest is an electronic music celebration held over the Canada Day long weekend in beautiful Kananaskis country. Surrounded by mountains and trees, it creates a vibe quite unique to many of the festivals I’ve been to.  I was lucky to have experienced Fozzy Fest first hand for the previous three years, which I think gave me a huge advantage to coming up with something that suited the party’s brand.

The event poster and flyer that I did for the Fozzy crew was my first piece of real design work to speak of.  It was also my first taste of freelance.  It’s been nearly a year since completion but it’s still one of my favorite pieces in my portfolio.

From the get-go I worked with event promoters Shawn and Darryl closely.  They pitched the concept of trying to create an image of what it would look like standing in the middle of the dance floor, surrounded by trees, looking up at the stars.  I took it from there and we ended up with the below poster and flyer.

Note about the Fozzy Fest website: I didn’t have anything to do with building it except offering my theme as a background image.

First Post

Hello web friends.  If you haven’t checked out my info page, I’ll fill you in on what’s going down at my WordPress site.  I’m a graphic artist currently enrolled in the NMPD program at SAIT here in Calgary, Canada.  My own site is still being developed so I’ve started this blog to get my portfolio online in the interim.

It will take me a while to get all of my images web-ready so I’m starting with the oldest and I’ll work my way up to the here and now.

Now that that’s out of the way, let’s get down to business.
